HOP CITY 2019 | THE LOWDOWN
The time has come once again to celebrate the humble hop in style here at Northern Monk. Hop City 2019 will be the third instalment of the UK’s first hop-led beer festival, and this year’s promises to be even bigger and better than before.
We’ve brought together over 30 of the world’s best producers of hoppy beers (with maybe a couple more up our sleeves too) from the big to the small, the established to the fledgling. This year’s list will see plenty of classics pouring from the taps, and no doubt some new ones created too!
After the great success of introducing our all-in ticket for last year’s Dark City, we’ve followed this through into Hop City 2019. A widely used and lauded format all over Europe and the US, we found that it improved the festival experience of Dark City even more than we thought, and allowed our guests to enjoy a more diverse range of beers.
Your ticket price includes entry to the festival, a limited edition festival glass, and access to 100ml pours of the beers allocated to each session. There will be over 200 beers pouring at Hop City over the whole weekend – which breaks down to around 40 different beers per session. There’ll be plenty of choice and diversity for your palate, and smaller measures help keep things nice and mellow…
To reflect our new ticket format, and to provide the highest quality of choice at this year’s festival, we’ve asked all of our breweries to bring as many different beers as they’d like! Some will be pouring a select few over the weekend, others will have one keg of each beer and an ever-changing lineup throughout the sessions. We encourage you to interact with our brewery guests and find out all about their beers. They all love pouring at Hop City for this reason, the interactive aspect of the festival is something we’re all really proud of.
There will always be queues for the most popular and sought after breweries, and we can only buy certain amounts from our international guests; so if you’re looking for specific beers then please seek them out early to avoid disappointment. We allocate beers equally per session, so Saturday evening’s session will have just as much beer as Thursday.
One of the main goals of Hop City is to bring all these amazing breweries together on a level playing field – if a certain brewery sells out mid-session, there’ll still be plenty of awesome beer to try, we have a record number of breweries bringing first pours and festival exclusives this year! Session-specific beer line ups will be announced from Wednesday 10th April.
See the poster at the end of this article for our full festival line up.
We’re delighted to welcome our biggest range of food traders to Hop City this year – from festival favourites ParmStar to fresh Maine lobster from The Highroller Lobster Co. We’ll have poutine from Blue Caribou and veggie kebabs from Doner Summer alongside Dim Sum Su, The Holy Mountain, Soffles Chips and the delicious Maude Coffee.
Food traders will be accepting a combination of cash and card payments, there’s also a cash machine located 200m away on Water Lane should you need it.
THE MERCH & RETAIL
As always, we will be locked and loaded with Monk merch, including our exclusive Hop City t-shirts, and so much more…
Each session WILL have an allocation of cans for retail from our US guests – the full line up of cans is still TBC, but they’ll be available from the merchandise area at the start of each session with a limit of one of each can per guest.
All merchandise and retail payments will be taken by card and cash.
Our ambition is to make Hop City and Dark City world class beer festival experiences. The beer is front-and-centre of that, but we’re keen to nail the soundtrack too. Dark City is a celebration of all that is dark and for us, this marries up well with metal and rock. Hop City is all about the sounds of the city and we’ve invited some of the North’s brightest lights along to play*
(After leaving our guest breweries with tinnitus at Dark City we have moved all live music to The Refectory gardens.)
*DJ Format is not Northern but he’s a festival regular and always brings the party…
Our Friday and Saturday afternoon sessions have both sold out, however there’s still tickets available for the following sessions:
Thursday Evening: 18th April 18:00-22:00
Friday Evening: 19th April 18:00-22:00
Saturday Evening: 20th April 18:00-22:00
